Little Black Bird, by Anna Kirchner @rattletheshelves , is an Urban Fantasy novel released by @gurtdogpress on June 20th.
It follows Wiktoria as she discovers that magic is real and sorcerers are living hidden in her Polish hometown. This realisation leads her to question the origins of the strange abilities that have plagued her since she was a child. She finds herself battling both sorcerers and demons alike, with only her friends and a strange boy she seems to share her dreams with.

Little Black Bird is the start of a new series that is heavily inspired by Anna’s native Polish folklore. The book has questioning/asexual representation.

The gorgeous cover of Little Black Bird is made by Karolina Wucke , @wucke.illustration

Synopsis for Little Black Bird:

Magic is dying out, but it will not disappear without a fight.

Wiktoria is a seventeen year old with a secret: she has psychic powers. Her uncontrollable telekinesis hurts her and others, setting fires and throwing objects in the air, no matter how hard she tries to hold it back. All she wants to have is a peaceful, average life, but it’s difficult when you’ve been cursed to destroy the magical world.

Her carefully maintained facade of normality starts to unravel when she’s hunted down by local sorcerers and their Guardian, and accused of unleashing banished demons back into the human realm. When a murder shakes up the magical community, everyone agrees that the only way to save the world is to kill Wiktoria.

Her only ally is a boy who can read her mind, shares her dreams and makes her question her sexuality. Together, they face mythical creatures and uncover ancient legends, and they soon realize that there is no such thing as simply good or evil. Whether they break the curse or allow it to fulfil its destiny, the magical world will be forever changed.

Little Black Bird is a tale of trust, friendship and family, and what it means to discover one’s true path.

Excerpt:

I hadn’t always been like this.
When I was seven, I’d tried to impress my classmates with my abilities. It was the beginning of the first grade and we’d been learning to write “A” when I’d made a vase with flowers levitate. I don’t know what had been going on in the head of seven-year-old Wiktoria.
Had I seriously thought that telekinesis is cool? That I could use it like that, without payment? That kids would take to difference kindly? That they’d want to be my friends? Of course, no one had thought it was cool.
The children and our teacher had freaked out, and I’d fainted from the strain of using my abilities. The rest I’d overheard in the hushed whispers of my parents. They were the only ones to believe what had happened that day because they knew what I could do. The vase had fallen down and everyone got wet. A few children were scratched with the pieces of glass. Nobody had ever linked the incident to me but I think our teacher had lost her job and we’d moved to another city to start over. No one had ever said that it’d been my fault.
My parents had made the move sound reasonable: “Mummy’s got a better job,” “You’ll get to spend more time with Kari and Rafi,” “Grandma is sad and lonely, she needs us to be with her.” We packed up and left. The guilt of a seven-year-old is time-constrained and, even though my grandma used to terrify me, I’d been excited to see my cousins more often.
We’d transformed the move into an adventure and no one had ever mentioned my abilities—apart from grandma, but it’d been years since she’d succumbed to lung cancer. We kept our lives grounded deep in the mundane the best we could as I’d learned to contain my abnormality.
It all changed with the appearance of my stalker.

My review:

This book was definitely a surprise for me. I don't even remember the last time I read YA book or m/f, but I thought I give it a try bacause the blurb said it has asexual rep.

And I'm happy that I gave it a chance, although I almost put it aside because I couldn't get into the right mindspace for this book. After all i'm more than happy that I read it because holy hell, it was really good!

It was really YA, all the settings and being in a girl's mind was a bit different from my usual reads, but I liked being in Wiktoria/Redhead/Little Fox 's head. She was an interesting and great character. She was exactly what you want from a 16/17 years old girl while trying to figure out the world and her life with possible love in her future.
Artur was a very good character too, I really liked him. He was cute with all the caring and cuddles he wanted to give to his little fox. I loved them together while they were trying to figure out everything around and between them.

I said I wanted to DNF it, and let me tell you why; I missed the asexual side of the story. And the blurb doesn't said it will be 'possible love' or 'soul mate' between the two main character, it said friendship, and I wanted exactly that, friends only. So I was torn apart when it turned out the book will be more focused on their love relationship then I can possibly handle.
But I was wrong. I loved Artur and Wiki together. And although I missed the ace rep, it turned out quite well! First I thought it would be Wiki who is ace, but after a while I knew that wasn't the case.

I really loved reading this book and it was much better then I thought it would be - to my biggest surprise. I'm really happy that I read this story, and after that killer cliffhanger... come ON! I want book two right now!

Highly recommend this book!

Sometimes it takes that special someone to open our hearts.

Blurb

Riley

My heart belonged to him the moment we met. Four years later and my feelings haven’t changed.

Daniel Winters was closed off, unapproachable for anything but sex, and I refused to give in. I was—and still am—worth more than a one-night stand.

But lately something’s changed in him. Something I can’t resist. And my heart is demanding it won’t be second priority any longer.

Daniel

The world is changing. I’m changing. It used to be my job was all I cared about. Getting a good story and telling the truth was priority. But now I find myself lonely, looking for something or someone to make my world bright.

Someone like Riley.

It’s been years since we first met, and I messed it all up. I’m not going to let him get away again, even if I do screw up occasionally.

When a blackmailer interrupts our new life, I may stumble, but Riley will help me pick up the pieces. We won’t go down without a fight.

Triggers: Alcoholism and drinking. Therapy sessions. Stalking. HEA guaranteed.

Excerpt

“Where are we?” I asked, eyes ping-ponging from one side of the street to the next.

“It’s the Art Walk.” Booths and tables lined the sidewalks, selling everything from paintings, to jewelry, to handbags.

“Come on.”

Riley smiled at my enthusiasm and led me to the first booth, then the next and the next. I bought a bracelet, and Riley got a bowtie just to make me laugh. We ate from a food truck and walked hand in hand, until Riley pulled me over to a building.

“What’s this?” I took off my sunglasses. “A bookstore?”

Riley eyed me warily. “Yeah?”

I grinned. “You sure know the way to a man’s heart, Mr. Ellis.”

Riley’s slight concern melted into a smile. “Let’s go.”

The Last Bookstore was a cool place—huge and stuffed with books organized in different ways. Some sections were arranged by color. Art installation dropped from the ceiling, and a massive elephant head with tusks hung on the wall. Books curved in an arch from ceiling to floor.

We took our time wandering around, showing each other interesting discoveries and laughing at each other’s choices.

“What’s your favorite genre?” Riley asked.

I read the back cover of a biography Riley had handed me. “Suspense. I like horror and mysteries, but suspense or thrillers covers a lot.” I put the book away. “What about you?”

“I was more into movies, obviously.” Riley gave a small grin. “But I used to read comics when I was a kid. And I’ve read a lot of Old Hollywood biographies.”

“Makes perfect sense.”

I dragged him to a section with graphic novels, and we perused the shelves. I handed him a yaoi novel, and we had to stifle our laughter at the graphic sex scenes.

“I never read those comics when I was a kid. I didn’t even know they existed.”

“They’re big in Japan and South Korea.”

Riley’s eyes lit, and he pulled me to another section. “Writing references?” I asked. “You think I need to brush up on my skills?”

Riley shook his head. He pulled a book off the shelf and handed it to me.

“On Writing by Stephen King.” I smiled. “I’ve seen this. It’s a hybrid autobiography and ‘how to write’ book.” Touched, I kissed him lightly. “I love this. I’m going to get it.”

“Let me. I want to be a part of your book writing in some small way.”

“You really think I should write a novel?” My eyes stayed glued to the photo of Mr. King with his feet up on a massive desk.

“Only if it’s something you want.” Riley took my hand. “I think you’d be amazing at it, though.”

I finally met his gaze, and I had to swallow the lump that appeared in my throat. “You’d be a huge part of it, Ry.”

He smiled and lit up my whole world.

Special Cover Reveal Excerpt:

I turned to see Dane grinning at me. “What?”
He bobbed his shoulders in a shrug. “Nothing,” he replied innocently.
“Bullshit. You’re thinking something, I know it.”
Letting go of my noodle, I sank beneath the surface of the water and propelled myself forwards. I heard him shout when I grabbed him around the waist. I tried my damndest to drag him under too. We wrestled in the water for a few minutes, splashing around.
I came up for air with a gasp. Dane sputtered right beside me before throwing an arm around my neck, to try and get the upper hand. I kicked myself away from him. He barked out a laugh and grabbed the waistband of my trunks. And, since I’d lost some weight, they slipped down my hips too easily.
“Dane!”
It was my turn to yelp. I twisted out of his reach, my face burning as I yanked them back up. I spun in the water to face him, except when I did, it brought us damn near nose to nose. My breath caught in my throat. His lips were too close for comfort. It would be so easy to kiss him. Fuck, it would be so damn easy…
Our eyes met. Dane froze, his hand stilling on my shoulder. My pulse thudded wildly in the back of my skull, eradicating all thoughts in its wake. I gazed at him and tried to memorize the single threads of green and gold that seemed to weave themselves around his pupils.
For one breathless moment, he leaned in. I thought he might actually kiss me.
Then he grinned and splashed me in the face, and the moment was over, just like that. Damn. “I was thinking you seem happier, and it makes me happy. That’s all.”
“I am happier,” I told him. “Out here, it feels like I can forget about everything but the water and the sun, and the hotdogs and marshmallows we’re gonna cook over the fire. It’s nice. I’m glad you harassed me into coming.”
“Me too. It wouldn’t be the same without you, man.”

Blog Tour - Excerpt, Giveaway ~ Surviving the Merge

BT Banner

Blog Tour, Excerpt & Giveaway:
Surviving the Merge by C.P. Harris

Surviving the Merge Cover

Chadwick, Book 1

My name is Justin, and when I was seventeen, I fell in love with a boy named Damon.

Damon was sick, only I didn’t know it at the time. And like any disease left untreated, it festered and burrowed into the unaffected areas of us, until we were both so far from healthy, we were killing one another. Then a tragedy sparked our implosion.

With nothing of us remaining to salvage, I was left to pick up the pieces, while Damon found his escape in the abyss. Leaving me alone with Blake.

Damon and Blake are two halves of a whole. But Damon is the coldest part of darkness, and Blake the warmest part of light.

I love Blake with a ferocious intensity akin to the peeling back of skin. But Blake isn’t Damon. And Damon was gone—until now.

What once threatened to tear us apart has become our catharsis.

Outnumbered in the relationship with the man who was my life, I’ve begun to learn more about love than I ever thought possible.

An M/M romance and book one in the Chadwick trilogy.
Can be read as a standalone, but reading in order is recommended as the characters make appearances in all three books. Surviving the Merge contains explicit sex and graphic language.

Author’s note: For those that appreciate warnings, please use the “look inside” feature to find them within the first several pages. Warnings & reader advisory: Surviving the Merge is an M/M romance with adult and, at times, dark themes. It is intended for mature readers. Possible triggering content includes mental illness, rape (off page), codependency, and dubious consent. Surviving the Merge does not contain cheating.

Teaser 2

Blog Tour Excerpt:

Now Friday afternoon, I found myself tumbling to the ground inside the front entryway after a wild animal crashed into me when I opened the door. Its brown mane blocked my vision, and its snarl wreaked havoc on my hearing.

“Ow, what are you doing?” I could tell this was serious to her, but I couldn’t control my laughter. Sam was even cuter when angry.

“I’ve got a bone to pick with you, Mister.”

I loved it when she called me Mistah.

“I can’t believe you told him things before me?”

“Sam, you know more about me than he does.” We were speaking of Max. During our phone call, I’d filled Sam in on every square inch of my return to Chadwick.

“Yeah, but he knew things that I didn’t. Important things!”

“Like what?”

“Like about your dad. And why you moved here. And... and more.” Her bottom lip poked out in the most adorable way. I fought back a smile, but she suspected one lurked and punched me in the shoulder before rolling off me and stomping to the kitchen. I got up to follow.

“Sam, you’re my first friend—”

“Your only friend—”

“My first best friend—”

“Your only best friend—”

“Sam!”

“Fine!” She whirled around, jabbing her finger against my chest. “But he only gets to have you Monday through Friday. As your only best friend, I recognize that you need someone when I’m not there. As soon as the weekend rolls around, you’re mine, Buddy.”

Excerpt:

Thinking about Cooper though… well, that did something to me. It made me annoyed, mostly, but for some reason that annoyance made itself known through what I’d begun to think of as “angry dick.” Yes, thoughts of arguing with Cooper made me hard. And since I was fixing to spend the entire summer sleeping near, fighting with, and pretending to kiss and hug the man, this was going to be a problem.

“Keep it together,” I grumbled under my breath. Nacho’s ears perked up in the rearview mirror. “Oh, not you, baby. You’re fine. Go back to sleep. Daddy’s just having a sexuality crisis, no big.”

I remembered one time when Cooper was staying over during a spring break, I’d come home late from helping a neighbor fix his tractor shed and run right into Cooper pouring himself a glass of ice water in the darkened kitchen. He’d been standing there in nothing but navy-striped boxer briefs, and I’d stared at him like he was some kind of alien.

“Nine,” he’d said slowly. “Didn’t know you were out this late.”

I’d glanced my fill of his entire body, curious more than anything about what another man outside my family looked like without his clothes on. Since I’d helped my dad on the farm and worked at Walt’s, I hadn’t played school sports and had the locker room experience like some others had.

I remembered the air getting weird between us and his underwear getting bulgier as we stood there. Had it been possible he was getting hard for me? I’d known he was gay, but this was something else.

“Uh, yeah,” I’d croaked. “Was working at the farm next door. Sorry.” I’d scooted past him and raced for my room, kicking myself for apologizing for being in my own damned kitchen. After that, every time I’d seen Cooper I hadn’t been able to help but look at his fly to see if he was getting hard for me again. It had been this inappropriate addiction I’d had that had pissed me the hell off and started the odd discord between us. Was it ego? Did I really care if some gay guy found me attractive?

So yeah. I was sweating buckets and probably going to puke and faint at the same time the minute I saw him at the renovation cabin. Super-duper.

When I finally pulled off the deserted mountain highway and onto the road where the property was located, I finally pulled over and upchucked into the weeds at the side of the forest. Nothing like christening a new place with a little vomit.

Nacho whimpered and whined from the half-open window, so I waved my hand at him to let him know I was still alive. I used some napkins from the side pocket to wipe my mouth and then swished with water from my water bottle. Finally, I popped in some mint gum from the console and tried to take a deep breath. At least now I wasn’t going to puke when I saw Cooper.

Lucy Lennox Logo

About Lucy:

After enjoying creative writing as a child, Lucy didn’t write her first novel until she was over 40 years old. Her debut novel, Borrowing Blue, was published in the autumn of 2016. Lucy has an English Literature degree from Vanderbilt University, but that doesn’t hold a candle to the years and years of staying up all night reading tantalizing novels on her own. She has three children, plays tennis, and hates folding laundry. While her husband is no shmoopy romance hero, he is very good at math, cooks a mean lasagne, has gorgeous eyes, looks hot in his business clothes, and makes her laugh every single day.

Lucy hopes you enjoy sexy heroes as much as she does. Happy reading!
